Solving Design Problems and Challenges
Stories torn from the front lines on the war against deadlines!
Three examples of dedication, tribulation, and going where other designers feared to go.
1. The new logo
Client had several other designers take a crack at it first – didn’t like any of them. They’re a technology company and telling their story of data analytics in a symbol was no easy trick! I tweaked a font, then used the capital L from the name – cloned it, and flipped it, to make a rectangle. Then I cloned those shapes smaller, and again smaller – inset to make a symbol suggesting an analyzing process – drilling down into data.
3. How do you say OMG in Mandarin?
Years ago I stumbled onto an assignment that was a challenge from beginning to end – a small corporation had somehow inherited a cache of unbranded, private label safety products… and they needed the entire lot packaged in a MONTH. From design board to instore – with the designs printed and packaged in Shanghai. Somehow I pushed thru the language barrier with a small but loyal team and we made the deadline. The flashlights were great – I still have a few that still work! The package design isn’t exactly modern now – but that was a Herculean effort.
2. 1000 lbs of Content into a 5 lb. Slide
The client provided a stick figure drawing and a very long page of text – with a concept that they wanted to convey in three consecutive slides. And of course ‘finish up the entire presentation by 5pm!’ A few back and forths with team members and I managed to condense the story to one slide with two small text builds. Problem solved – a concise story keeps the audience more engaged.
